OpenODB Developer Release
Commonly Asked Questions and Answers
HP Internal Use Only
1. Is it possible to pull up the training schedule for my
customer?
Answer: Training is scheduled on a "first come, first served"
basis. That is, when you place an OpenODB Developer Release
order for your customer, you are put in the queue for
training. The sooner you place the order, the sooner your
customer will get trained. All training is scheduled through
our training hotline at (408) 447-5051.
2. Can we send more than four people to training?
Answer: Additional customer employees can attend the class
depending on space and availability. Each additional person
will be charged $900.
3. Can someone from the HP field attend the training?
Answer: We would like to encourage an SE from the field to
attend training with the customer.
4. Can my customer get an early release of the software and
documentation?
Answer: Customers must take the training course before
receiving the software. Your customer will receive prestudy
material prior to the training. This prestudy is designed to
bring all students to the same level of knowledge on object-
oriented concepts. If, for some reason, your customer also
requires documentation, please call (408) 447-5050 to make a
request. We will do our best to accomodate you.
5. What can my customer do prior to the prestudy?
Answer: We encourage your customer to read articles about
object-oriented analysis, design, programming, databases, etc.
We also encourage your customer to attend a course on object-
oriented analysis and design, if at all possible. Please
contact the training hotline at (408) 447-5051 for course
recommendations.
6. What prerequisites should the student meet prior to training?
Answer: The target audience for the training are
programmer/analysts. The student must be familiar with
software development, the C programming language, the
appropriate operating system (HP-UX or MPE), database
technology, and an expert in the customer's application area.
7. How can I schedule training at my customer's site?
Answer: Training at a customer site in the U.S. will be done
on an exception basis only, with costs to be bourne by the
field. In Europe and ICON, we will coordinate training in
designated HP locations. If exceptions are necessary, we will
work with the field and the customer to determine the
appropriate location.
8. Why is the training in Cupertino for U.S. customers and
designated sites for non-U.S. customers?
Answer: The customer will have access to a broader range of
equipment, resources and expertise. Also, this allows us to
train more customers at a time which means your customer can
be trained sooner.
9. Is this product GSA or developer discountable or is it
possible to receive a quantity discount?
Answer: GSA and developer discounts are not available. The
only available discounts are A1000 (VEU), A1001 (VAR) and
AE09V (Educational). Since this product includes services in
addition to software, additional discounts cannot be given.
Services are not discountable. Additional discounts will
apply in the future when OpenODB software and documentation is
available separately.
10. When will the software be sold separately from the training,
consulting and support services?
Answer: The timing of production software will be based on
the customer's need to deploy software for production. This
is not expected until late-1992.
Pricing for OpenODB software will be comparable to the high-
end relational DBMS products (e.g. Oracle).
11. Where can I obtain configuration and sizing information?
Answer: Software configuration information is available
through CONRAD and in the Technical Data Sheet (Part Number:
5091-2702E) for OpenODB. Contact the Sales Response Center for
hardware configuration and sizing advice.
